The “Beast of the East” Killington Ski Area and the Cascades Lodge, so well-known to TOHG members, will once again be our destination from January 2-7, 2022. We will revitalize our bodies with 5 days of skiing and rest each night at the same lodge we have come to know and love.

Killington is one of the largest ski areas in the eastern U.S  with 155 trails for all abilities (28% easier, 33% more difficult, 39% most difficult).

Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are available at nearby Mountain Meadows XC Center. Day passes are about $25. A public golf course adjacent to Cascades Lodge can also be accessed at no cost for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

The Cascades Lodge, near the base of the mountain, has a convenient, free shuttle from the lodge to the base area. Deluxe rooms offer double occupancy with two queen-size beds, one double bed and one queen bed, or one king bed. Rooms have internet access as well as a refrigerator, hair dryer, coffee pot, and ski storage. The Lodge has an indoor pool, hot tub and Finnish sauna, a pub, and a living room and dining room. An extra “living room” area next to the pool is available to gather for our nightly pre- and après-dinner gatherings.

The package cost includes: five nights lodging (Sunday through Thursday), a full, hot breakfast buffet each day including all taxes and gratuities even if we have fewer than 20 people, four dinners on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights—buffet style or plated, based on the final count of participants. On Tuesday, January 4, 2022, we will eat out with each participant responsible for the cost of their dinner. As in the past, the Summit Lodge will accommodate us.

If you have not been to Waterville recently, they have opened a new peak not too long ago, called Green Peak, which offers 14 New trails, 3 Greens, 7 Blues and 4 Blacks. They are now equal in size to Loon in that both have 61 Slopes and Trails, and both offer the same vertical drop. The Ski Touring Center is world class and is within walking distance to the hotel that we will be staying at. It has an excellent reputation for all levels of skiers from beginners to experienced.

Most the rooms offer two queen beds, but some offer king beds for those who would prefer a king bed.

There are several restaurants either within walking distance or a one-minute drive away. Coyote Grill, Valley Pub & Restaurant, La Hacienda Mexicana, La Tasse, Olde Waterville Pizza and Snowy Owl Pub.

We were planning to have a social hour each evening after skiing (both kinds) where we can meet, bring appetizers, wine, beer, or the drink of your choice alcoholic or non-alcoholic.

    • Sugarloaf Inn, 5000 Commons Circle, Carrabassett Valley, ME 04947
    Join waitlist

We will return to Sugarloaf Resort in Carrabassett Valley Maine where, during this past March, we enjoyed the varied terrain of the third highest peak in Maine with some skiing above the tree line. For the second time, we will stay at the Sugarloaf Inn located on the mountain with ski in/ski out facilities. The walk from the back door of the Inn to the chairlift is short and the lift takes us directly to the main Sugarloaf Plaza. From there, it is easy to buy tickets or refill RIFD cards and hop onto lifts to begin a day of fantastic skiing. All trails lead to the unique slope-side Sugarloaf Alpine Village that offers more than a dozen restaurants and shops.

In addition, besides alpine skiing, Sugarloaf also has Maine’s largest Nordic center, called The Outdoor Center, for cross country skiers tucked into the woods just minutes from the base area. The lodge has a full Nordic retail shop, rental center, and café – all surrounded by some of the most picturesque trails in New England. The Sugarloaf Explorer Shuttle provides transportation to that area along its route.

We have reserved both single and double rooms, each with its own bath, for about 20 people. While the Inn has no elevator, the friendly staff will readily take luggage up to the rooms upon request. The second floor is the location of the Shipyard Brew Haus restaurant where the included cooked-to-order breakfast is provided. Lunch and dinner are also available. Ski lockers are located on the second floor near the back deck so that exit to the slope with equipment in-hand is easy.

Please purchase your lift tickets, on sale online at Sugarloaf:

    • 4 days ages 65-79 $124
    • 3 days ages 65-79 $101
    • Ikon Pass is accepted
    • Over 80 ski at $5 per day or can buy a season pass for $30.
The Nordic Center pass is $18 for a full day and $14 for half day.

These prices will change as we get closer to ski season.

Please register online by October 1 at tohg.org. Payment by credit card only for the hotel package to reserve your spot. After that date, excess rooms will be cancelled. Each person of a couple must register separately.

After October 1, any cancellations are subject to a 10% cancellation fee of the total reservation.

    Air Travel Itinerary

    • Philadelphia > Salt Lake City, 9:15AM-12:16PM
    Saturday, March 19, 2022
    • Salt Lake City > Philadelphia, 1:15PM-7:33PM
    • Philadelphia > Boston, 8:55PM-10:17PM

We recognize that it is a very early departure time on March 12th, but groups are assigned to those flight times which enables them to benefit from discounted airfares (especially true this year). We are monitoring nonstop flights and fares and if we find one that is advantageous, we will reserve it for the group.

Register online at TOHG.org by September 20th to reserve your spot. Payment is by credit card only and full payment is required by September 20th.

    Lift Tickets

For this year, PLEASE PURCHASE YOUR SKI TICKETS INDIVIDUALLY ONLINE AT ALTA.COM, WITH AVAILABILITY STARTING OCTOBER 1, 2021.

This year is most unusual as Alta is not offering deep-discounted group or senior tickets and the rate for our package would have been $120/per day for an Alta-only 5-of-6-day ticket and $170/day for the same combined Alta/Snowbird ticket.

They are however, offering online direct purchase, early-season competitive ticket prices and we have determined that this is a more economic option for the group than offering tickets through our package. The multi-day tickets online will have a flex day included (i.e. 4-of-5, 5-of-6 day, etc.) to allow a day off from skiing. Purchasing tickets at the area ticket window upon arrival will be considerably more expensive. We will send a reminder e-mail prior to October 1 to jog your memory and keep you current of any updates.

IKON passholders have direct-to-lift access and do not require lift tickets.
The pass is valid at Alta and Snowbird and al- lows you to ski back and forth at both areas on the same day. Non-passholders might want to strongly consider purchasing an IKON pass this year (IKONpass.com), as it will almost “pay for itself” with the high cost of lift tickets at Alta, and is usable at the TOHG ski trip destinations of Killington, Sunday River and Sugarloaf (as well as Loon).

Those 80 and over ski free at Alta (but not Snowbird) and must obtain their free tickets each day at the ticket window, not online. You also have the option of paying for a weekly Alta pass ($50 plus tax at shop.alta.com/sea- son-passes or at the base area ticket window) which alleviates the need to go to the window each day.

A complimentary trip is received for 25 paid participants.

Reminder: skiers are required to wear ski helmets on all club sponsored downhill trips.
