Appleton Farms (Thursday, September 03, 2026)

Appleton Farms is a park in Ipswich, Massachusetts, owned and maintained by The Trustees of Reservations. The property was deeded to the Trustees in 1998.[1] The land was granted to Samuel Appleton, an immigrant from Little Waldingfield, England, in 1638 by the town of Ipswich and is one of the oldest continuously operating farms in Massachusetts.[2] In 2002, The Trustees of Reservations established a vegetable Community Supported Agriculture Program.[3] Also maintained by the Trustees of Reservations is the adjacent Appleton Farms Grass Rides. The trails are easy to walk and well maintained.

Last summer, we walked the Appleton Grasslands. This time we will walk through the fields and around the farm. This is an historic farm-recently archivists uncovered a portrait of George Washington on the property. Family members also had a long term relationship with Harvard. For those who are interested there is also a vegetable market selling produce some of which is grown on the farm.

Parking is available a lot at the farm end of the long drive. Take a right at the small booth and continue to the end of the road.

I suggest we do lunch at the Farm Bar and Grille in Essex. The address is 233 Western Ave, Essex. If others have a preferred place in Ipswich, we can go to that location.

Great Canadian Adventure (Tuesday, October 13, 2026)

We're off to scenic St. Andrews, New Brunswick, Canada for several days of fun and activities. St. Andrews is a 6-7 hour drive from Boston, just 1/2 hour over the border from Calais Maine. It is right on the Bay of Fundy which has some of the highest tides in the world.

Our activities will include bicycling, hiking and golf.

The main attraction is Ministers Island, home to a 50 room mansion built by Sir William Van Horne in the 1890's. The estate captures the characteristic features of landscape design of the time including formal gardens, a farm, recreational facilities, and forests, all integrated into Atlantic Canada's rolling landscape and dramatic views. The estate buildings include the mansion and a collection of highly original and innovative structures designed by Montreal architect Edward Maxwell: a massive two-storey barn, an ocean-front bathhouse, a windmill, and a gas plant. The 500 acre island is only accessible by car, bicycling or by foot at low tide. Don't worry - tides and admission hours are highly visible.

Other sites and activities include Kingsbrae Gardens, whale watching, an 18th century blockhouse, a charming 18th century downtown and more.

We will be staying at the historic Kennedy House, 218 Water St., St. Andrews, NB Pricing includes all taxes, and fees. You will need a valid passport for this trip. All pricing is in Canadian Dollars. Currently the Canadian dollar is trading at approximately CDN $1.00 = USD 0.72 I am currently trying to arrange a nearby cofee/breakfast and farewell dinner venue as this is not part of the hotel offering due to renovation work.

Space is very limited. Single rooms (king or queen bed) are CDN $387.00 plus 18.5% taxes and fees per room. This is for three nights

There are only 3 double rooms (Queen or double beds) for CDN$ 537.00 plus 18.5% taxes and fees per room. This is for three nights **NOTE - You will be placed on a waitlist if you choose this option. There are no more available as of 8/17/26**

Please call me at (781) 775-1824 or email me at massprocess@msn.com for room assignment. I will need your credit card info but you won't be charged until you check in to the hotel. No cancellation penalty up to 48 hours before check in but there are no refunds after 48 hours prior to check in. You are not registered for the hotel or guaranteed a room until you have spoken with or emailed me

Admission to Ministers Island and the mansion is CDN 20.13 over 65 (add CDN 2.00 under 65)

Admission to Kingsbrae Gardens is CN 19.55

Further details on biking, hiking and golfing to follow.

Activity leaders are Neal Schmitt for hiking, Nora McKenna for golfing and Alan Ulrich for biking

Helmets for bicycling are required by law.

Bretton Woods, NH - Downhill and X-Country Skiing (Sunday, December 13, 2026)

Start your TOHG 2026-27 ski season at the AMC Highland Center Lodge!

Located just two miles from the Bretton Woods ski resort, which features downhill and cross-country terrain. Stay 1, 2, 3 or all 4 nights.

The Highland Center is one of the many lodges operated by the Appalachian Mountain Club. All rooms being held for the TOHG have private baths and are typically located on the second or third floor with beautiful views. Elevator and bag carts are available at the main entrance. Lots of parking within a short walk from the main entrance. Free wi-fi is included, but no TV.

There is also a large guest dining room where we can gather for all meals. There's a small gift shop and game room. The Highland Center offers complimentary LL Bean gear for us to borrow on a first-come, first-served basis. The gear room is usually stocked with boots, outerwear, backpacks, hiking poles, and snowshoes, but they do not have any Cross-Country skiing equipment.
Waterville Valley, NH - Downhill & X-Country Ski (Sunday, January 31, 2027)

Join us for another 5-night, all-inclusive vacation at Waterville Valley!

The downhill ski mountain has all levels of skiing from Greens to Blacks and several nice places for lunch, which is the only time you will need money during your entire trip.

The Ski Touring Center is world-class and is within walking distance to our hotel. It has an excellent reputation for all levels of skiers, from beginners to experienced.

There are also several areas that offer free snowshoeing and winter hiking.

We have reserved every room in the Hotel so anyone you see is either Staff or a TOHG member. I am told that the hotel has gone through a series of updates and that the ”rooms look amazing”

The Silver Fox Inn is conveniently located in Town Square within walking distance to most everything in Town Square as well as the Cross-Country Touring Center. Most of the rooms offer two queen beds and there is a limited number of king beds for those who would prefer a king bed. Included in the rates is a shuttle bus that runs every 30 minutes with a convenient pickup and drop location at the end of the hotel parking lot.

The area also has the White Mountain Athletic Club; there will be an additional charge to gain access. The club has indoor pools, jacuzzi, indoor tennis courts, free weights and weight room, cardio room, one hour of open skating time at the ice arena, and more.

We are planning a Pizza Party on the night of our arrival to be held in a very convenient gathering space, which again is BYOB and is included in the price of the room.

The Hotel does not have a liquor license so we will be allowed to have BYOB for all activities at the hotel. We are planning to have a Après Ski Party each day before dinner where we can enjoy appetizers, water, wine, beer, or the drink of your choice, alcoholic or non-alcoholic. Again, all of the above will be supplied by TOHG.

The all-inclusive price for the 5 nights includes the Sunday night Pizza Party, 5 breakfasts and 4 dinners in the dining room as well as snacks and drinks. So, all of your daily expenses should be covered except for lunches. (Note: it’s perfectly fine to bring any soft drinks, wine, or beer from Après Ski to dinner with you.)

Lodging and Meals: (check-in Sunday, check-out Friday)

Double Occupancy: $605.00 (USD) per person

Single Occupancy: $1,025.00 (USD) per person

Lift Tickets

Three days out of five $167.00 (USD) for those who want to do both downhill and cross-country

Four days out of five $222.00 (USD)

80+ Ski for free

Downhill skiers are required to wear ski helmets on all club sponsored trips.

Cross Country Passes

The cost for the Cross-Country Touring Center has not been set for this year yet. Passes must be purchased separately at the Touring Center. The prices will be firmed up towards Thanksgiving.

NOTE: in past years all of the rooms have sold out quickly, so please register soon to reserve your spot.

Please register online at tohg.org. Payment by credit card only by November 30th to reserve your spot. Note that each trip participant must register separately online.

Cancellations: You may cancel your registration through November 30, 2026 without penalty (less a 3% processing fee). Cancellations after that date are not refundable unless a paid replacement is found. Please see full Cancellation Policy on the TOHG website.

Loon Mountain, NH - Downhill & X-Country Ski (Tuesday, February 09, 2027)

This year the club is returning to beautiful Loon Mountain, conveniently located on the scenic Kancamagus Highway in Lincoln, NH. Given Loon’s proximity to many of our members, this three-night stay may offer the opportunity for four days of skiing. Loon offers 3 peaks, 11 chair lifts, and 61 trails, providing ample opportunity for skiers of all levels.

Some great areas for hiking and snowshoeing are also nearby, along with resort-sponsored craft and sightseeing activities. All this makes Loon a great trip for non-skiers as well.

Lodging: Double occupancy: $230/person

We have several two-bedroom suites reserved at the Pollard Brook Inn, located less than a mile down the road from the mountain. Each suite has two bathrooms, a kitchenette with a full refrigerator, a dining and living room area, two separate bedrooms, and a Murphy bed in the living room. Each suite will easily accommodate four skiers. Skiers desiring single occupancy should contact the leader directly.

Let us know if you have a group of 4 who would like to share a suite. We’ll also look to help match roommates if you’re in search of one.

Resort amenities include:

Two hot tubs; Indoor pool and exercise areas

A charming common area along with a private space available for happy hours and game nights; a movie theatre (often showing Warren Miller films!); various craft and resort activities.

Being located near the center of Lincoln, there are several excellent restaurants only minutes away for those wishing to dine out. Historically we’ve had a group dinner out on our final evening.

Lift Tickets:

They also honor the Ikon Pass (although, unlike other Ikon resorts, lift reservations must be made in advance online).

Loon offers free skiing for those over the age of 80 (check website for details).

Discounted multi-day, midweek lift tickets will also be available online in the fall.

Registration:

Please register online at tohg.org. Payment is due to TOHG by October 1, 2026.
Each person of a couple must register separately.

Roommate preferences can be made during registration, and assignments will be finalized once the trip roster has been completed.

You may also find a roommate by making a request through the Roommates and Carpooling page in our website.

Cancellations:
Cancellations may be made through October 15, 2026 without penalty (less a 3% processing fee). Cancellations after that date are not refundable unless a paid replacement is found or rooms are consolidated. Please see full Cancellation Policy on the TOHG website.

Sunday River, ME - Downhill & X-Country Ski (Sunday, February 21, 2027)

The club is continuing our wonderful tradition of sojourning to the ski-in/ski-out Grand Summit Hotel at Sunday River. The resort offers the most terrain in the East with a network that spans eight mountain peaks, providing great options for skiers of all ability levels. In recent years, Sunday River has added two state-of-the-art high-speed and heated bubble chair lifts to make your skiing experience even more comfortable. Additionally, the hotel offers two large hot tubs and an outdoor pool for those wanting to soothe their muscles at the end of a day on the slopes.

In addition to great downhill skiing, there are myriad wonderful cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and winter hiking options at the nearby Bethel Inn and Carter’s Cross Country Ski areas.

Lodging: We’ve reserved deluxe suites which historically have comfortably accommodated four people. Each suite consists of a bedroom side with two queen beds, and a kitchenette side which is shared for meals with a Murphy bed and pull-out sofa bed. The sides are separated by a door and each have their own private bathroom. Requests for roommates and room style (bedroom or kitchen side) will be addressed on the online registration form.

Final rooming assignments will be provided mid-January 2027. Note: depending on the distribution of preferences it is possible that some requests (kitchen v. bedroom side) may not be able to be honored. That said, last year only a very small number of such requests couldn’t be met. Please indicate on your registration if that was the case with you so you can have priority this year.

If you wish to book a room that does not require sharing the kitchenette please reach out to the trip leaders and we will check into availability and pricing.

Per tradition, we will also have nightly social hours, either in one of the suites or by the fireplace in the lower lobby.

Meals: One group dinner is included in the registration costs. For other meals everyone will have access to the shared kitchen facilities or may wish to visit one of the many local restaurants in Sunday River or nearby Bethel.

Cost:

Double Occupancy — $615 per person

Single Occupancy — $1,165 per person

Registration: If you already have a roommate or are registering for a single room please register on the TOHG website. (Note: each person must register separately).

If you need a roommate, please contact the trip leaders who will look to help match you with a roommate. Also, the TOHG website has a “roommate and carpool” section where you can post for a roommate. If you have preferred “suite mates” please indicate on your registration. Payments for registrations are due by October 1, 2026.

Lift tickets: Sunday River honors the Ikon Pass.

Those over the age of 80 can buy tickets online usually for under $10 for the week.

For others, multi-day tickets can be purchased through the website,

Historically for those ordering early, the cost for senior and mid-week tickets has been quite reasonable.

Also, we may be eligible for a small group discount on lift tickets (details to follow).

Cancellations: A full refund (minus 3% credit card fee) will be issued for any cancellations prior to October 15, 2026. After that date full refunds will be issued only when a paid replacement is found or when we can consolidate rooms. The closer we get to the dates of the trip, the less likely we will be able to arrange for a full or partial refund.

Please feel free to reach out to us if you have any questions or comments.
