Middle Sugarloaf - Bethlehem, NH Elevation 2,538 ft
Trailhead located near a parking area off Rt 302 across from Zealand Rd (just 12 mins from AMC Highland Center)
This hike coincides with the Bretton Woods Ski Trip.
Route: Middle Sugarloaf only: 2.8 mi round trip with 900 ft elevation gain. Include side trip to North Sugarloaf via Sugarloaf Trail (N branch): 3.4 mi roundtrip with 1,100 ft elev gain. Also note that due to Zealand Rd seasonal closure there will be a short (about 1 mi) road walk in to the trailhead.
We will decide as a group if we want to include both Middle and North Sugarloaf. This hike would be appropriate for experienced hikers only. Conditions in December vary. We would be expecting hikers may want to use snowshoes to preserve the trail. The AMC Highland Center has these available in their equipment room. If you prefer to hike using microspikes (and conditions allow) plan to bring your own or purchase them at the AMC store. They do not lend out spikes. In addition we would expect everyone to carry the 10 essentials: The 10 Essentials: What to Pack For a Backcountry Hike
We generally don’t hike very fast - ~1mi/hr. We would plan to head out around 10am from the lodge. Trail-lunches can be ordered at the Highland Center. (Order the night before - vegan option available). We love to have lunch at the summit. The view from the summit is expansive including peaks in northern Vt as well as the Presidentials and Mt Washington.
Kenn and I are experienced hikers in the white mountains, having hiked a number of 4000 footers and all of the 52 WAV (with a view) peaks. We have experience hiking in all seasons.
If you intend to go you must make your own overnight reservations at the AMC Crawford Notch Highland Center. It's important you call, 603-466-2727, option #1, Mon.-Sat. 10am -5pm, and mention Group #719316.
Bad Weather date 12/17.
