Join me for a walk in the Appleton Grass Rides at 219 Country Rd, Ipswich, MA. The Grass Rides are an English tradition and were constructed to allow for horse and carriage rides. The area also includes a mile long steeplechase route. The walk should be easy with a few hills and very few rocks and roots.
The Appleton family owned and developed land in this area for nine generation and deeded it to the Trustees. An interesting historical feature is a column salvaged from Gora Hall, the old Harvard library. This column is one of four given to Mr. Appleton who was chair of the Harvard Library. As a Trustee Reservation, there is a posted parking fee at the parking lot, but the kiosk in which you would pay is broken and looks like it has been broken for some time. If functional (doubtful), the charge is $6.
After the walk, I suggest lunch at the Choate Bridge Pub at 3 S. Main St., Ipswich. They have a variety of sandwiches and salads and chowder. This restaurant is about 3 miles from the Grass Rides.
