The SW Mystery Group met for a leisurely lunch on March 29 at Maguire's Bar and Grill in Easton, MA. Eight members and two potential members participated. They included Rosemary S., Shirley McP., Linda K., Linda McN., Chuck and Susan H., Joan S., Clo F., Linda and Walter B.
Everyone enjoyed a delicious meal and wonderful companionship. Absent from the picture were Rosemary and Linda B. (who took the picture).
Hub Mystery @ WGBH: On a sunny but crisp Monday, March 26, nine members of the Hub Mystery Group gathered in Brighton at One Guest St, the home studios of WGBH. There we met Scotty Hart, our Docent, who led us on a most fascinating tour of the shining facilities of our PBS stations, both radio and television. Among the highlights was viewing “Jim & Marjorie" during their daily broadcast. Our docent was wonderful, filling us in on the history of the building, and many backstories and details of the facility and the people who work there. The building itself is a beauty to behold, with state of the art technology that is truly impressive. We also got an "up close and personal" view of the broadcast studio of 99.5 FM, WCRB.
After the tour, we proceeded to the Stockyard Restaurant for a delicious lunch and more socializing--what fun! Thanks to all who attended and made it special.
On Tuesday, March 20th, nine members of the Northern Mystery Group met at the Moonlight Meadery in Londonderry, New Hampshire. Our hostess and vice-president of marketing, Denise Van Der Berg, gave us a detailed tour and lecture into the intricacies of mead making, and the bees themselves. One bee makes 1/3 TEASPOON of honey in its six week lifetime, flying up to six miles each way at speeds up to 15 mph! The first couple of months of the year (because of the ski season), it is usual for the “Gang" to have just lunch and no “mystery". This time, I thought we should try something different. Four of our “Gang” SW members (Skip/Mary C, Marco/Ines A) have joined a sports facility near Foxboro called ForeKicks and are now aficionados of the game “pickleball.” WHAT’S PICKLEBALL ???- This is a game resembling tennis in which players use paddles to hit a perforated plastic ball over a net.
We set up a surprise for the remaining 10 members of our group to sit on some bleachers at the sports center to watch them play this fascinating game. Marco preceded the game with some basics of how to play and how to keep score. It was a fun time for all of us to watch how proficient they are and how much they enjoy the sport. I am sure that since they were former tennis and Ping-Pong players helped a great deal. After a couple of games we went for a lovely lunch at the Horse and Carriage to talk about our entertainment of the morning. (A few of us are tempted to give it a try).
We met for a brief afternoon coffee/tea before bundling up for a brisk walk in the cold a few blocks to the Ayer Mansion at 395 Commonwealth Avenue in the Back Bay. The last existing house designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany, it has been partially restored with amazing results so far. Our tour, given by Jeanne M. Pelletier, offered us a wealth of interesting information - about the house, about Frederick Ayer, and about Louis Comfort Tiffany.

On a snow covered morning, with bright winter sunshine and mild temperatures, Thirty three TOH Gang members gathered at Cobblestones Restaurant in Lowell for a Jingle Bell Brunch. We enjoyed the beautiful historic building, but were surprised and admittedly disappointed at the meal service which did not measure up to previous years venues. Unfortunately, the restaurant kitchen staff “forgot” several items that were on the menu, and were slow to replenish the supplies of food that were served. OOPS! We all enjoyed the time together, and the private dining room which allowed us to socialize with each other. Lesson learned, don’t mess with success.
